Permissions

Platonic Physical Contact: Just don't. He's cold as ice (literally and figuratively) and will probably just give you a toss if you try to touch him. Unless of course, your character is one that he tolerates. Such as Talon operatives or very specific ex-Overwatch members.
Violent Physical Contact: He will meet you in the middle. Immediately. He has no problem with retaliation with violent means--he understands violence more than anything, honestly. He's also more likely to initiate violence than to wait for someone else to get violent first, too. High-functioning psychopath indeed.
Mindreading: Has a mind like a bag full of cats. Try reading the mind of a mentally unstable ghost who's more anger than most other emotions. Get out of there, there's nothing you want in there, unless you want to read a sad story about a man who wanted more out of life than he could get.
IC Personal Boundaries/Warnings: I'll go back to that 'High functioning psychopath' bit for a second. He's not stable. And he's very prone to shooting first and asking questions later. At the very core of his character, he's violent and generally uncaring. I won't be insulted if you want to opt out of playing with him.
OOC Personal Boundaries/Warnings: I'm only willing to do shipping/nsfw things with people I have been RPing with for a certain period of time.
Other Notes: Calling him Gabriel is just another way to piss him off. He'll always introduce himself/call himself 'Reaper', but if you hear the name 'Gabriel' off one of his castmates, practice caution when calling him that to his face.

CURRENT CHARACTER(S):

☆ CHARACTER INFORMATION
NAME: Reaper / Gabriel Reyes
CANON: Overwatch
AGE: 56* (Roughly estimated using the game's timeline. Not actually stated in the game/lore.)
CANON POINT: infiltration of Volskaya Industries.
BACKGROUND: Here.

PERSONALITY:
You have a cold cold smile. You were burned, you were about to burn, you’re still on fire.

At a glance, there’s little more to see in the face of this skull-masked, self-proclaimed psychopath than someone who is trying to make an image of terror and death of himself to any who may cross his path. Being mercenary with no loyalties and unknown goals, he is a faceless visage who brings Death with him wherever he goes--so while thoughts like these aren’t inherently untrue--there is far more to the man behind the mask than the voice of one who announces without any hint of a joke that Death Walks Among You.

Before adapting the name Reaper, he was a different man with different goals. With a life and even a family of other Heroes within the ranks of Overwatch: a multi-national crime-fighting organization bent on world peace and betterment of man and omnic-kind. A born leader who worked his way into military power under the hope of becoming one of the world’s rays of hope in the time of crisis, it was well known that Gabriel Reyes, the man behind Reaper’s mask, was one of great respect and even greater ambition. From what information exists about who he was before he became what he is today, he was a man who commanded loyalty and respect from those who worked with him--and that he didn’t rise to one of the founding members of Overwatch on brute strength alone.

While many might try to assume that Gabriel Reyes is a cold and ruthless man--what with how he was given leadership over the Black Ops faction of Overwatch, Codenamed Blackwatch, there’s much to prove that he’s not nearly as cold and emotionless as one might lead you to believe. In the Halloween comic--Junkenstien’s Revenge--near the end of the story, Gabriel shows up at the end in a full Headless Horseman costume that he admits to having made himself. His overall tone during this scene is jovial and nearly childish, showing that he has a personality that allows something playful despite the way he needs to conduct himself during his job. Alongside this, it’s also well known that he was responsible for breaking up the Deadlock Gang, a gang of ruthless gunslinging thugs that hung around Route 66. While his job and goal entailed to either kill or see the gang members arrested and put in jail, it’s well known that he not only took Jesse McCree under his wing--a young member of the gang and no more than a 17 year old child at the time--and taught him everything he knew. Showing that he knows how to show mercy on those who deserve it, and believes in those who can redeem themselves too.

Fast-forward to the present, however, and one may argue that these traits are buried under the man he now is. A shell of a man, nay, a ghost of his former self. Having burned alive in an inferno that swallowed the Overwatch base in Zurich when he and the Strike Commander fought over their petty differences, that hard-assed but good-natured man is buried under feelings of betrayal and bitterness for what happened to him. Abandoned by his ward, Jesse, losing his best friend to political power, and having everything he worked for ripped out from under him, it’s very clear that his entire being has been damaged by his fate--both literally and figuratively. He was brought back to life by the kindness--or perhaps cruelty--of doctor Angela Ziegler, AKA Mercy, but the procedure and its half-success has left him permanently scarred both physically and mentally. Everything was stolen from him, even a clean death, and the resentment he feels towards those who wronged him was enough to send him over the deep end.

They left you to die, and they left me to suffer’, as he says to Ana Amari in the Old Soldiers comic strip. Her reaction to seeing his face under the mask is one of clear horror, proving that he’s not only been brought back from the dead, but horridly disfigured enough to warrant shock from an old friend. His body’s cells are said to go under rapid regeneration and degeneration, likely giving him a horridly disgusting shape under the layers he wears. His tone in speaking to Ana shows how bitter he is about the hand that life has dealt him, and how he’s let feelings of revenge and resentment drive his actions forward. Forward enough for him to work as a hired gun for Talon, a terrorist organization that he once fought against when he was a Hero of Overwatch. His bitterness stemming from being a Hero for so long and being both unappreciated and even hated for it in the end, he holds strong beliefs that there’s no need for Heroes in the world anymore, and that Overwatch is just a sad story that needs to be put to an end.

His treatment of other heroes in-game are telling of his personality as well, such as how sourly he speaks of Winston--a highly intelligent, genetically modified Gorilla--calling him a ‘stupid monkey’, or referring to Omnics(AI) such as Bastion or Zenyatta as ‘tin cans’ despite it being proven that even Omnics can possess a soul as a human does. His interactions with Ana are bitter comments to her ‘Always taking Jack’s side’ shows that he once considered her a friend, and feels as if she has turned her back on him for not supporting him like she does Jack, and his comments to McCree also show how he feels abandoned; calling him an ‘ingrate’, and that he had ‘taught him everything he knew’.

Some of his voicelines also add an insight to the way he speaks and acts around others, and while anyone would think immediately that all of his speech and interactions would be just as edgy as he is, they’d be wrong. Hilariously, a great many of his lines come off as somewhat sassy and even sarcastic, such as his ‘I’m not a psychopath, I’m a high functioning psychopath’ quip, or even his ‘Haven’t I… killed you somewhere before?’ that comes off as even somewhat flirty can suggest that he has a sense of humor buried under all of his bitterness and irritability. The way he interacts with Sombra, as well, suggests they have a complicated relationship as she’s casual enough to tease him even during a mission (opening a door for a moment to deny him entry within the same second) and for him to banter at her that it’s “Nice to see you doing your job for once.” When she manages to take down an enemy during battle.

Whatever his goal is--either to truly uproot every last part of Overwatch that exists or to uncover what truly ripped apart the Zurich base that night of his fight with Jack Morrison is unknown, but one thing is known for sure: Reaper is a sad and bitter old ghost, having little more than anger and a driven goal that allows his body to exist in its horribly unnatural way. Unafraid to gun down anyone who might get in his way, be them security personnel in Russia or Old Friends in Egypt, he’ll get any job done by any means necessary.

ABILITIES/POWERS:

Wraith
”Looks like you’ve seen a ghost.”

It’s not entirely clear to what exactly Reaper is thanks to the limited information Blizzard has released about their character, but given what we know of the lore of Overwatch and the science that exists within it, it’s easy to put the pieces together. Reaper was brought back to life by scientific means, and whatever procedure that was conducted on his body simply went wrong, and has caused his body to become something twisted and out of human shape. While it’s unknown what his face looks like, it’s clear from the comic, the game, and even the animated shorts that he can turn his body into a gaseous cloud--speculated to be a cloud of nanomachines that keep his body regenerating from its constant degeneration--and into human form again. He can travel distances unnoticed by taking this form, as well as avoid taking damage from enemy attacks. His speed is also greatly increased in this form and he can slip between the cracks and get into places one normally wouldn’t be able to.

Reaping
”The few bodies recovered of his victims were pale, empty husks drained of life, their cells showing signs of intense degradation.”

While it’s not entirely clear what Reaper’s body is--science or supernatural--if there’s one thing that’s clear it’s that he can drain the life from those he defeats in battle. Leaving lifeless husks of those who die in battle against him, he takes on their energy for his own, referring to the energy as the ‘souls’ of the fallen. Though, whether or not the energy he takes is actually a person’s soul or just that he can steal the remaining vitality from fresh corpses is uncertain, it’s at least clear that he takes energy from the bodies of the dead.

Shadow Step
”From the shadows.”

Relating back to Reaper’s Wraith form, his Shadow Step ability allows him to move from one place to another with relative ease. However, this ability is limited to its short range and is restricted to Reaper’s line of sight. For example, he could use this ability to ‘teleport’ to the top of a building as this can be within his line of sight. However, if his destination is for example, behind a door or wall, he cannot simply teleport inside a building because his destination isn’t one he can see.

Active Regeneration
”That which doesn't kill you, makes you stronger.”

Hard to kill what’s already dead, isn’t it? Even harder when what you’re trying to kill doesn’t exactly have a body that’s always tangible enough to shoot down with bullets or even destroy with a Tesla Cannon. In the short ‘Recall’, Reaper is literally obliterated by a high-energy electric cannon and comes back later without a scratch. His body turning into a cloud when he sustains enough damage to literally explode, he survives and regenerates later, suggesting that it’s harder to kill him then one might think. He is a ghost, after all.

Firearms - Hell Shotguns
”Death Blossom is Ready.”

Probably one of the biggest jokes in Overwatch is that ‘Reaper doesn’t know how to reload’. Which is due to his personal reload animation that causes him to throw down his current guns and pull out an entirely new set from under his coat. How many he has on his person is anyone’s guess, and why he doesn’t reload like a normal human being is a mystery, too. But that aside, his weapon of choice ARE two huge, double-barrelled shotguns with intense kickback. They can tear though both people and even anti-omnic tanks like in the ‘Infiltration’ short, but are extremely short-ranged and require Reaper to get up into the face of his foe in order to do any significant damage. Not that he has a problem with that.
When facing multiple foes, as well, he is capable of unleashing an ability which makes him shoot off a flurry of shrapnel in every direction, causing massive damage to anything and everyone within range. While using this ability, Reaper is nothing more than a vague blur of smoke and bullets until he’s wiped out everything around him.

INVENTORY:
Hell Shotguns (Who knows how many.)
Several shotgun shells on belts (Why do you have these when you don’t reload.)

Short-range communicator (Ignored by teammates often.)
Skull mask
Armour, clothing, etc

[He’s not going to waste time making a video or system-wide call that would be inviting of conversation. Text was, in every form of the word, easier for getting a point across and even easier for getting people to understand the entire situation without useless chattering about things that weren’t important.

After a few moments of typing, a message flashes across the public network in a tidy, pointed font:]

Don’t let them bite you. Just watched a kid try to use some animal planet-esque attempt to ‘talk with the animals’ only to get turned into one of the damn things. Now he’s growing a sixth arm and watched his teeth fall out to get replaced with some nastier ones.

Find somewhere to hide. Keep your fingers to yourself. And if you think you can fight the damn things, think again. You can’t.

Parasites can’t get into my body. Tell me your location, and I’ll drag you out of the fire. But if you do anything stupid, I’ll leave you behind in a second flat. I don’t have time for anyone who wants to play hero.

canon: Overwatch

(canon) background: Here.
CRAU: Eluvio

↪ Arriving to the Eluvio had been a strange experience for Reaper--as a mercenary he first thought he had been captured by an enemy. He was held in quarantine due to his body being dead but walking--but once the medical staff deemed him not a danger of infecting others with his body’s strange rapid regen/decay, he was allowed free reign of the ship like all others who arrived.

↪ Space travel isn’t a hugely documented thing in his world apart from the Moon Base’s colony of Superintelligent Gorillas (seriously) but getting used to the idea that there’s life far from Earth took a bit of getting used to. Also getting used to the fact that being a dead man walking isn’t the weirdest thing to exist took some getting used to, too.

↪ Being away from home become, on one side of things, a bit of a point of uncertainty for Reaper. He has goals, ambitions, and things he feels he must finish before whatever’s keeping him alive gives up the goat and his life truly ends. However, given that he’s friends with Sombra, the super-hacker, he felt as if they would eventually find a way home. This was enough to make him not worry about being far from home--because he doesn’t exactly have any connections other than goals to take care of there.

↪ He has a distrust of governments and authoritative figures as a basis due to his history, but within the first few weeks of his arrival, he learnt that the people spirited away onto the ship were being used for missions of a questionable nature. His own ally from home, Sombra, being one of them. When learning she was rewarded for the possible genocide of an entire planet, he decided it was the first step to distrusting the government/people in charge here to. So much so that he even killed some of the aliens that had been brought aboard the ship during evacuation alongside another untrusting crew member he’d made an alliance with.

↪ Within the next few weeks when murders started happening on board the Eluvio, as well as technical failures and sabotaged systems including life support and artificial gravity, Reaper began to suspect the ‘rescued’ aliens alongside a great number of other members.

↪ During this, he was forced to interact with a great number of individuals, both combat trained and common civilian alike. Being a man who was once a soldier and a leader, he took it on himself to (reluctantly) teach a few of those on board basic self defense and how to handle small-scale weaponry to avoid being the next victim of the ‘random murders’ happening on board.

strengths:

Leadership: He used to be one of the co-founders of the heroic international group called Overwatch. He was a driven force and a competent leader, and was liked by many of the people who worked under him. Noted as being the main driving force behind the end of the Omnic Crisis, his leadership abilities are second to none. These skills as a competent leader to haven’t faded--capable of teaching others how to handle themselves in battle and protecting those he considers allies is second nature, as a good leader never leaves anyone behind.

Drive: Not too many people can continue on working towards their goals even after they’ve died, but this is the main strength Reaper has going for him. Back in his younger days as a military leader, he had a drive to do what was right, even if it was unsavory. That drive lived on after death just as he has, and he now uses it to push himself forward, even if it means being the bad guy. Throwing himself into situations where he could even lose his life AGAIN; so long as he can attain his goals and get where he wants.

Resilience: He’s been knocked down and thrown around, people have tried to bury him, kill him, and keep him down. Like a coil, no matter the situation Reaper is thrown in, he always manages to bounce back--even being blown up in a military base, he gets up and continues forward. Attacking the Overwatch Museum to steal tech only to be beaten? Fine, he’ll attack a base in Gibraltar to steal information. Get electrocuted to death again by a tesla cannon? Fine, he’ll get up and go attack Russia’s main weapon base to kill the most powerful woman in Russia. He’ll always get back up.

weaknesses:
Holds Grudges: He used to be a hero, and a well-known one. He was surrounded by many friends and allies, and yet at the end of it all, everything was taken away from him. Now as the terrorist reaper, he’s turned his back on all those who turned their back on him, and he’s not so quick to forgive those who wronged him. Killing ex-Overwatch agents systematically, having a list of names that were his old friends--he holds a grudge against all of them and probably will until the bitter end.

Fixated on Suffering: He wears a mask. His body is constantly deteriorating and rotting and healing in a mad cycle that never ends. It’s suggested that living is painful for him, his body a constant ache. Because of this, he uses his sufferings and pains as a fixation point. Telling those he holds grudges against that his suffering is their fault, that he was hurt so he will hurt those who caused it in return. He hides his disfigured body and laments being killed, so much so that he drives others away from him simply by being some ‘horrifying monster’.

Impatient/Irritable: He’s a military man with a very low sense of humor and even less patience for people who play around when there’s work to be done. Having to growl at his allies to ‘focus on the mission’ or to ‘stop fooling around’ are extremely common phrases for him to throw around, and barking out his annoyance for tomfoolery of those he’s working with is pretty much the norm for him. If there’s a job to do, do it fast, and don’t mess around.

skills (optional):
Fluent in both English and Spanish
Skilled in heavy and light weaponry, close ranged combat, mid-ranged combat.
Leadership skills in a militaristic setting
Sewing/Crafting/making own clothing/accessories (I’m serious)
Black Ops operations (Locating, Capturing, Interrogation, and all that nasty stuff that goes with it)

housing (optional): Anywhere is fine, with the other Overwatch characters would be cool, but not necessary.

private log - sombra / reaper au

[He's had a number of dreams in the extremely short moments of sleep his body allows him since he'd been taken from his home on Earth. Due to the constant regeneration and degeneration of the cells in his body, in his bones and in his head, settling enough to let his mind fall asleep is hard. But when he manages to drift off, the constant chemical changes in his head loves to evolve into vivid pictures, memories he'd rather not remember or images that aren't real.

When his eyes adjust to the muted light of the alleyway he finds himself now, his first thought is exactly that: another dream. A dream of home, of the dirty alleyways of whatever city Talon had set up base this particular month. He doesn't feel any real need to get up and let the dream trick him into thinking he was finally home again. So he doesn't. Not until he feels something buzz against his hip.

Even he would have to admit that that sensation was too real to be a dream. He blinks, and he lifts his head up from where it's resting on the side of the dumpster. A familiar, white-hot pain crawls down his back, only to fade away into its usual dull ache, and that's what solidifies it for him. This isn't a bad dream being had behind his eyelids during a twenty-minute power nap. The buzzing sensation redoubles itself, and a familiar ping lights up on his communicator. It won't stop, for nearly a full thirty seconds before he can articulate enough to pull it out of his pocket.

Even while in space and in 'quarantine', he'd kept up the pointless task of keeping his personal devices fully charged. He always quietly hoped he'd go home one day, and having his phone and communicator dead when he did would be stupid. McCree had called it 'paranoia.' Genji had called it 'understandably nostalgic.' Gabe had called it logic, and as he sits, watching the literal dozens of texts make the screen scroll--he feels somewhat smug that he'd been right.

The feeling doesn't last long. Not when he finally starts to read the texts that are making his communicator freak out. Some of them are repetitive, some of them single words, but most all of them ask something along the same lines at the end.

Where Are You?

Talon is an organization that loses agents all the time. They hold no love for tired, paid mercenaries--no matter how good you are. A month after Gabriel had gone MIA, Talon would have taken measures to make sure he hadn't gone turncoat and then after two months of dead air, they would have considered him Missing or KIA. They'd write him off as finally having died after ten years of cheating life, and they would have moved on. Widowmaker wouldn't have cared.

Sombra...

Where Are You?

She was safe. She hadn't left Bajikan to go where he had. She'd gone home before him. And she hadn't stopped looking for him since she'd gotten back.

He can feel teeth biting against the cool, marred flesh of his lips, and he rises from where he's sitting on the ground. The sun has already set and the low light was coming from a flickering streetlamp just overhead. He doesn't know where he is. If Talon is set up in this city, or if he's stuck in some dead-end town in the middle of no-where.

Whichever it is...

Sombra would know.]
