CURRENT CHARACTER(S):
NAME: Reaper / Gabriel Reyes
CANON: Overwatch
AGE: 56* (Roughly estimated using the game's timeline. Not actually stated in the game/lore.)
CANON POINT: infiltration of Volskaya Industries.
BACKGROUND: Here.
PERSONALITY:
You have a cold cold smile. You were burned, you were about to burn, you’re still on fire.
At a glance, there’s little more to see in the face of this skull-masked, self-proclaimed psychopath than someone who is trying to make an image of terror and death of himself to any who may cross his path. Being mercenary with no loyalties and unknown goals, he is a faceless visage who brings Death with him wherever he goes--so while thoughts like these aren’t inherently untrue--there is far more to the man behind the mask than the voice of one who announces without any hint of a joke that Death Walks Among You.
Before adapting the name Reaper, he was a different man with different goals. With a life and even a family of other Heroes within the ranks of Overwatch: a multi-national crime-fighting organization bent on world peace and betterment of man and omnic-kind. A born leader who worked his way into military power under the hope of becoming one of the world’s rays of hope in the time of crisis, it was well known that Gabriel Reyes, the man behind Reaper’s mask, was one of great respect and even greater ambition. From what information exists about who he was before he became what he is today, he was a man who commanded loyalty and respect from those who worked with him--and that he didn’t rise to one of the founding members of Overwatch on brute strength alone.
While many might try to assume that Gabriel Reyes is a cold and ruthless man--what with how he was given leadership over the Black Ops faction of Overwatch, Codenamed Blackwatch, there’s much to prove that he’s not nearly as cold and emotionless as one might lead you to believe. In the Halloween comic--Junkenstien’s Revenge--near the end of the story, Gabriel shows up at the end in a full Headless Horseman costume that he admits to having made himself. His overall tone during this scene is jovial and nearly childish, showing that he has a personality that allows something playful despite the way he needs to conduct himself during his job. Alongside this, it’s also well known that he was responsible for breaking up the Deadlock Gang, a gang of ruthless gunslinging thugs that hung around Route 66. While his job and goal entailed to either kill or see the gang members arrested and put in jail, it’s well known that he not only took Jesse McCree under his wing--a young member of the gang and no more than a 17 year old child at the time--and taught him everything he knew. Showing that he knows how to show mercy on those who deserve it, and believes in those who can redeem themselves too.
Fast-forward to the present, however, and one may argue that these traits are buried under the man he now is. A shell of a man, nay, a ghost of his former self. Having burned alive in an inferno that swallowed the Overwatch base in Zurich when he and the Strike Commander fought over their petty differences, that hard-assed but good-natured man is buried under feelings of betrayal and bitterness for what happened to him. Abandoned by his ward, Jesse, losing his best friend to political power, and having everything he worked for ripped out from under him, it’s very clear that his entire being has been damaged by his fate--both literally and figuratively. He was brought back to life by the kindness--or perhaps cruelty--of doctor Angela Ziegler, AKA Mercy, but the procedure and its half-success has left him permanently scarred both physically and mentally. Everything was stolen from him, even a clean death, and the resentment he feels towards those who wronged him was enough to send him over the deep end.
‘They left you to die, and they left me to suffer’, as he says to Ana Amari in the Old Soldiers comic strip. Her reaction to seeing his face under the mask is one of clear horror, proving that he’s not only been brought back from the dead, but horridly disfigured enough to warrant shock from an old friend. His body’s cells are said to go under rapid regeneration and degeneration, likely giving him a horridly disgusting shape under the layers he wears. His tone in speaking to Ana shows how bitter he is about the hand that life has dealt him, and how he’s let feelings of revenge and resentment drive his actions forward. Forward enough for him to work as a hired gun for Talon, a terrorist organization that he once fought against when he was a Hero of Overwatch. His bitterness stemming from being a Hero for so long and being both unappreciated and even hated for it in the end, he holds strong beliefs that there’s no need for Heroes in the world anymore, and that Overwatch is just a sad story that needs to be put to an end.
His treatment of other heroes in-game are telling of his personality as well, such as how sourly he speaks of Winston--a highly intelligent, genetically modified Gorilla--calling him a ‘stupid monkey’, or referring to Omnics(AI) such as Bastion or Zenyatta as ‘tin cans’ despite it being proven that even Omnics can possess a soul as a human does. His interactions with Ana are bitter comments to her ‘Always taking Jack’s side’ shows that he once considered her a friend, and feels as if she has turned her back on him for not supporting him like she does Jack, and his comments to McCree also show how he feels abandoned; calling him an ‘ingrate’, and that he had ‘taught him everything he knew’.
Some of his voicelines also add an insight to the way he speaks and acts around others, and while anyone would think immediately that all of his speech and interactions would be just as edgy as he is, they’d be wrong. Hilariously, a great many of his lines come off as somewhat sassy and even sarcastic, such as his ‘I’m not a psychopath, I’m a high functioning psychopath’ quip, or even his ‘Haven’t I… killed you somewhere before?’ that comes off as even somewhat flirty can suggest that he has a sense of humor buried under all of his bitterness and irritability. The way he interacts with Sombra, as well, suggests they have a complicated relationship as she’s casual enough to tease him even during a mission (opening a door for a moment to deny him entry within the same second) and for him to banter at her that it’s “Nice to see you doing your job for once.” When she manages to take down an enemy during battle.
Whatever his goal is--either to truly uproot every last part of Overwatch that exists or to uncover what truly ripped apart the Zurich base that night of his fight with Jack Morrison is unknown, but one thing is known for sure: Reaper is a sad and bitter old ghost, having little more than anger and a driven goal that allows his body to exist in its horribly unnatural way. Unafraid to gun down anyone who might get in his way, be them security personnel in Russia or Old Friends in Egypt, he’ll get any job done by any means necessary.
ABILITIES/POWERS:
Wraith
”Looks like you’ve seen a ghost.”
It’s not entirely clear to what exactly Reaper is thanks to the limited information Blizzard has released about their character, but given what we know of the lore of Overwatch and the science that exists within it, it’s easy to put the pieces together. Reaper was brought back to life by scientific means, and whatever procedure that was conducted on his body simply went wrong, and has caused his body to become something twisted and out of human shape. While it’s unknown what his face looks like, it’s clear from the comic, the game, and even the animated shorts that he can turn his body into a gaseous cloud--speculated to be a cloud of nanomachines that keep his body regenerating from its constant degeneration--and into human form again. He can travel distances unnoticed by taking this form, as well as avoid taking damage from enemy attacks. His speed is also greatly increased in this form and he can slip between the cracks and get into places one normally wouldn’t be able to.
Reaping
”The few bodies recovered of his victims were pale, empty husks drained of life, their cells showing signs of intense degradation.”
While it’s not entirely clear what Reaper’s body is--science or supernatural--if there’s one thing that’s clear it’s that he can drain the life from those he defeats in battle. Leaving lifeless husks of those who die in battle against him, he takes on their energy for his own, referring to the energy as the ‘souls’ of the fallen. Though, whether or not the energy he takes is actually a person’s soul or just that he can steal the remaining vitality from fresh corpses is uncertain, it’s at least clear that he takes energy from the bodies of the dead.
Shadow Step
”From the shadows.”
Relating back to Reaper’s Wraith form, his Shadow Step ability allows him to move from one place to another with relative ease. However, this ability is limited to its short range and is restricted to Reaper’s line of sight. For example, he could use this ability to ‘teleport’ to the top of a building as this can be within his line of sight. However, if his destination is for example, behind a door or wall, he cannot simply teleport inside a building because his destination isn’t one he can see.
Active Regeneration
”That which doesn't kill you, makes you stronger.”
Hard to kill what’s already dead, isn’t it? Even harder when what you’re trying to kill doesn’t exactly have a body that’s always tangible enough to shoot down with bullets or even destroy with a Tesla Cannon. In the short ‘Recall’, Reaper is literally obliterated by a high-energy electric cannon and comes back later without a scratch. His body turning into a cloud when he sustains enough damage to literally explode, he survives and regenerates later, suggesting that it’s harder to kill him then one might think. He is a ghost, after all.
Firearms - Hell Shotguns
”Death Blossom is Ready.”
Probably one of the biggest jokes in Overwatch is that ‘Reaper doesn’t know how to reload’. Which is due to his personal reload animation that causes him to throw down his current guns and pull out an entirely new set from under his coat. How many he has on his person is anyone’s guess, and why he doesn’t reload like a normal human being is a mystery, too. But that aside, his weapon of choice ARE two huge, double-barrelled shotguns with intense kickback. They can tear though both people and even anti-omnic tanks like in the ‘Infiltration’ short, but are extremely short-ranged and require Reaper to get up into the face of his foe in order to do any significant damage. Not that he has a problem with that.
When facing multiple foes, as well, he is capable of unleashing an ability which makes him shoot off a flurry of shrapnel in every direction, causing massive damage to anything and everyone within range. While using this ability, Reaper is nothing more than a vague blur of smoke and bullets until he’s wiped out everything around him.

[He’s not going to waste time making a video or system-wide call that would be inviting of conversation. Text was, in every form of the word, easier for getting a point across and even easier for getting people to understand the entire situation without useless chattering about things that weren’t important.
After a few moments of typing, a message flashes across the public network in a tidy, pointed font:]Don’t let them bite you. Just watched a kid try to use some animal planet-esque attempt to ‘talk with the animals’ only to get turned into one of the damn things. Now he’s growing a sixth arm and watched his teeth fall out to get replaced with some nastier ones.
Find somewhere to hide. Keep your fingers to yourself. And if you think you can fight the damn things, think again. You can’t.
Parasites can’t get into my body. Tell me your location, and I’ll drag you out of the fire. But if you do anything stupid, I’ll leave you behind in a second flat. I don’t have time for anyone who wants to play hero.
